Perth is Australia's fourth largest city and the capital of Western
Australia. It’s the fastest growing area in the country, with a
healthy, expanding economy driven largely by the need to meet the
rising demands for raw minerals from emerging economies such as China.
25% of the world's largest mining companies, including Rio Tinto,
Woodside and BHP Billiton, have bases in the resources quarter of the
central business district. Indeed, the city is so important to mining
and energy-related initiatives that it controls about 80% of all
Australia's projects.
It’s made up of an interesting ethnic mix, with a significant
proportion of British-born residents. Its overall population is just
35% that of Sydney and yet the numbers of native Brits living in the
two cities are very similar.
