Kuala Lumpur is the capital of the Federation of Malaysia, a country consisting of two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Sarawak & Sabah), separated by 640 miles of the South China Sea, where the bulk of its oil and gas reserves lie.
KL is a city with an urban population of 1.4 million while a further 6.5 million live and work in the surrounding metropolitan area. The population is a mixture of predominantly Malays, Chinese and Indians, reflecting Malaysia’s rich cultural, racial and religious diversity.
It is the most industrialised and economically the fastest growing region in Malaysia, perhaps being epitomised best by the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, which house the headquarters of the national oil company Petronas.
Malaysia is among the world's largest exporters of electronic equipment, petroleum and liquefied natural gas, chemicals, palm oil, wood and wood products, rubber, and textiles. It boasts a rapidly expanding tourism sector thanks to its excellent transport and road infrastructure, extensive tropical coastlines and welcoming people.
