Parts of Abu Dhabi were settled as far back as the 3rd millennium BC
and, as recently as the mid-20th century, its economy relied on camel
herding, growing dates and vegetables, fishing and pearl diving. Most
city dwellings at the time were constructed of palm fronds, with the
wealthier families occupying mud huts.
Oil was discovered in 1958 and, when the United Arab Emirates became
independent in 1971, oil wealth flowed into the area and banks,
boutiques and modern high-rises quickly appeared.
